History
Founded in 1895, St Andrews New Course was designed by Keeper of the Green at St Andrews Links, four-time Open Champion and revered course designer, Old Tom Morris. The R&A commissioned the “New” course due to the Old Course’s popularity, making it the oldest ‘new’ course in the world.
St Andrews New Course is a wonderfully challenging course and an excellent introduction to the unique links environment at St Andrews. Although the New Course plays shorter and is notably less undulating than its illustrious neighbour, members claim it provides a better test of golfing prowess.

This is partly due to the New having just the one forgiving double green to gather wayward approach shots, compared to the Old Course’s seven. In amongst the flowering gorse and dunes of the back nine, the long par three ninth and seventeenth offer a formidable challenge when the wind blows.
While the prestigious Old Course takes all the limelight, the New Course is somewhat of a diamond in the first-cut rough. Tighter and more defined, the New is great fun to play and is a true test of your shot-making and course management. There is a reason this is the locals’ favourite course!
